Take the Pledge to Defend the Freedom to Read in Minnesota

What to do if a book is challenged in your school or library. If you’ve heard rumors that books in your school library are being challenged—or if you have school board members expressing concerns about the books your kids have access to—now is the time to take action! Not sure what to do? We’ve been through this right here, in Minnesota, and we’ve learned a lot! Based on our experience, here are some ways to get started.

"Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much" - Helen Keller

We are a local community group in ISD 15 that is a part of a growing coalition of concerned parents and community members throughout the state.  Through our work fighting an illegal book review process that essentially lead to almost 50 books being banned, we came together to create lasting change.  Fortunately, our story had a happy ending in which the books were returned and a legal policy was adopted.  However, the work continues.

Communities continue to see inappropriate actions from their school boards creating their own unique challenges.  We seek to offer connection and resources to help strengthen community voices and organize around these concerns.

We invite you to explore our resources and reach out to join our growing community groups.
