Launching Parents for the Freedom to Read Minnesota
“We’re asking every Minnesotan who believes in the freedom to read to stand with us. Sign the pledge, get involved, and let’s build a movement that keeps Minnesota’s schools and libraries open to every voice and every family.”
Minnesota Parents Unite to Launch "Parents for the Freedom to Read Minnesota" Website and Campaign
Today, a new statewide grassroots group—Parents for the Freedom to Read Minnesota—announced the launch of their website and campaign to defend free expression and oppose book bans in schools and public libraries across the state. The group, formed by parents and community members, aims to ensure that every child and family has the right to read freely, no matter where they live.
“Even with strong right-to-read legislation on the books, we’re seeing a rise in censorship attempts and challenges to books that reflect our diverse communities. We refuse to let Minnesota become like Texas, Florida, or Oklahoma, where entire categories of books are being removed from classrooms and libraries. Every child deserves the right to read, and every family deserves the right to choose what’s right for them.”
Parents for the Freedom to Read Minnesota was created by a coalition of parents, educators, and allies who are deeply concerned about the coordinated efforts to silence voices and restrict access to books. The group’s mission is to empower local communities—rural and urban alike—to stand up for the freedom to read, promote inclusive collections, and resist the spread of anti-access policies.
The newly launched website, www.freedomtoreadmn.org (placeholder), features a range of resources, including:
- A clear mission and vision for the group’s work.
- Practical guides for responding to book challenges.
- A pledge for Minnesotans to sign, showing their commitment to defending the freedom to read.
- Information about how to get involved and organize at the local level.
The group’s vision is simple: a Minnesota where no voice is silenced, no story is erased, and every child can learn and grow through the power of books. The campaign invites all Minnesotans—not just parents—to join the fight to protect intellectual freedom in every community.
“We’re asking every Minnesotan who believes in the freedom to read to stand with us. Sign the pledge, get involved, and let’s build a movement that keeps Minnesota’s schools and libraries open to every voice and every family.”
